It is argued that raising the minimum age for driving cars or riding motorbikes is the most effective method to improve road safety. While I believe that this method makes a significant contribution to preventing road accidents, I think that other measures are more effective.

On the one hand, I agree that increasing the minimum legal driving age can greatly reduce traffic accidents. In fact, young people’s careless driving is responsible for numerous traffic incidents. Many of them are juveniles who are not mature enough to be fully aware of how their reckless behaviors such as speed driving or driving under the influence can cause serious consequences. Therefore, raising the required age for driving can make sure that the youngest drivers are old enough to drive consciously to protect their own lives and other on-road counterparts, which decreases deaths and injuries.
Nevertheless, I believe that there are better ways to maintain road safety. First, governments should impose more stringent punishments on those who commit driving offences. For example, a heavier fine could be applied for those jumping the traffic lights, or a longer prison sentence should be imposed for those who cause serious accidents. When drivers can foresee the consequences of breaking the law, they are more likely to drive responsibly. Furthermore, drivers need to undergo training and intensive tests so that they can learn to make quicker and wiser decisions to avoid dangerous situations on the road.
