It is often argued that reading books is superior to watching TV or playing games as regards children’s cognitive development. I totally agree with this point of view.

First, reading books is more powerful than watching TV in shaping the way children view the world around them. Reading books provides children with deep understanding about the world and fills their brains with common sense. They can also freely pause at any pages and contemplate the lessons delivered in the stories, making them become more insightful and considerate people. Watching TV, on the other hand, provides a constant influx of new information which leaves no room for children’s mind to wonder. Even worse, they could become far from curious and creative as TV shows unconsciously guide them to accept others’ opinions rather than doubt and raise questions.
In addition, reading books is a more productive method of cultivating children’s imagination. When settling down with a book, children are transported to another world where they can immerse themselves in the lives of fictional characters, visualize the settings and guess the progress of the plot. By contrast, computer games with advanced technologies such as 3D illustration take imagination away from children as they are bombarded with ready-made settings. Moreover, overindulgence in games even causes some harmful health issues such as nearsightedness or even mental disorders.
